Providing Services To The Indianapolis Community Since 1984

Our History
Assistance League® of Indianapolis(ALI), the 78th chapter of National Assistance League®. Assistance League of Indianapolis was organized in 1984 and chartered in 1988, with tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. On average, the organization boasts 210 member-volunteers and has a 12-member Board of Directors. We have no salaried staff or paid employees. Our Board of Directors is a working Board, member-elected and meets monthly.

Operation School Bell®, our first philanthropic program, began in 1984-85. Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) agreed to have their social workers screen and identify children in need of clothing. In exchange, Assistance League gave clothing to IPS children who did not qualify for government school clothing aid. IPS provided space in the Service Center for Indianapolis Public Schools (SCIPS) for the clothing distribution.

Shoes: A Division of Operation School Bell® began as a pilot program in the 2000-01 school year. That year 1,108 IPS school children received new athletic shoes and socks. The Shoes program has continued to grow and now includes children from IPS and The Metropolitan School Districts of Warren (2002), Washington (2003), Pike (2005) and Lawrence (2006) Townships. Each child is screened and identified for services by school personnel.

ALI Bears started in the fall of 1987 to offer comfort to children and adults who were in emotional or physical pain. Teddy bears are given to hospitals, hospice centers, grief centers, and abuse management agencies.

ALI Friends began in 1990 as a means to nurture a relationship with senior citizens who knitted sweaters, hats and mittens for the children served by Operation School Bell. In 1992 the program changed to provide companionship and activities for seniors and the disabled in specific centers in the Indianapolis area. We currently serve Joy's House and North Capitol Hospital and Rehabilitation Center.

Assault Survivor Kits® began in 1994 to provide warm, comfortable, new clothing for victims of assault to wear when leaving the hospital. Often a victim’s clothing is torn and stained and/or kept for evidence. The kits, consisting of a sweat suit, socks and briefs were initially delivered to area hospitals and centers that treat victims of rape or assault. As this program has grown, the type of agencies served has expanded beyond adults and we now supply facilities that specifically serve children who are assault victims.
