Shoes: A Division of Operation School Bell®
Helping children in need succeed

Imagine wearing sneakers to school that are so big that they are stuffed with paper in the toes. Or, perhaps imagine wearing shoes so small that your toes are curled up.  Or, perhaps imagine your shoes had so many holes in the soles that they had newpaper lining the bottom. Or, perhaps imagine  you share your shoes with a brother or sister.  These are not stories from a third world country - these are actual situations that were documented by social workers when they asked Assistance League of Indianapolis to consider offering shoes as part of the Operation School Bell Program.  That request was in 2000- since then nearly 18,000 children have benefited from the Shoes program.  The goal for this year is to provide new sneakers and socks to 2,500 children.

Shoes: A Division of Operation School Bell
During the 2009-2010 school year, Assistance League of Indianapolis will provide 2,500 underserved children with new athletic shoes and socks. The children, ranging in age from elementary to middle school students, attend Indianapolis Public Schools and the Metropolitan School Districts of Lawrence, Pike, Warren and Washington Townships. Children often come with shoes that are two to three sizes too big or too small, mismatched shoes, footwear with holes and missing shoe strings, and wearing shoes without socks. Many of the students have never had a new pair of shoes. The athletic shoes provided by Operation School Bell puts smiles on children’s faces and eases the burden on families struggling to provide the essentials for their children.

What We Give

Each child receives one new pair of athletic shoes and two pair of socks. There are two sessions planned during which the children are fitted and given their new shoes and socks to take home.  Students attending the Township schools will receives their shoes on October 14th, 15th, and 30th; IPS students will be fitted in February over a two week period.

Assistance League purchases the shoes from Shoe Carnival at a negotiated cost.  Shoe Carnival selects the styles that will fit the widest range of ages and shoe sizes for the thousands of children that benefit from the Shoes program.  Assistance League members work side-by-side with Shoe Carnival personnel to conduct the fittings and transport the stock of shoes for each scheduled session.
