Shoes: A Division of Operation School Bell®
Helping children in need succeed

Imagine wearing sneakers to school that are so big that they are stuffed with paper in the toes, shoes so small that your toes are curled up or you  share your shoes with a brother or sister.  These are not stories from a third world country - these are actual situations that were documented by social workers when they asked Assistance League of Indianapolis to consider offering shoes as part of the Operation School Bell Program.  That request was in 2000 and now Shoes: A Division of Operation School Bell reaches over 2,600 children a year.

The athletic shoes provided by Operation School Bell put smiles on children's faces and eases the financial burden on families struggling to provide the essentials for their children.

Shoes: A Division of Operation School Bell
Shoes: A Division of Operation School Bell began as a pilot program in the 2000-2001 school year.  That year, 1,108 Indianapolis Public School children received new athletic shoes and socks.  A $20,000 grant from Dow AgroSciences LLC allowed the program to become a permanent part of Operation School Bell the following year.  This program has continued to grow and now includes children from the Indianapolis Public Schools and the Metropolitan School Districts of Warren(2002), Washington(2003), Pike(2005), and Lawrence(2006) Townships.  Each child is screened and identified by school personnel.

The 2011-2012 budget for Shoes: A Division of Operation School Bell is $72,100.  Funding is received through donations from individuals, businesses, corporations, grants and fundraising events.

What We Give

Each child receives one new pair of athletic shoes and two pair of socks. There are two sessions where the children are fitted and given their new shoes and socks to take home.  Township school students received their shoes over three days in October and Indianapolis Public School students will be fitted in February over a two week period.

Assistance League purchases the shoes from Shoe Carnival at a negotiated cost.  Shoe Carnival selects the styles that will fit the widest range of ages and shoe sizes for the thousands of children that benefit from the Shoes program.  Assistance League members work side-by-side with Shoe Carnival personnel to conduct the fittings and transport the stock of shoes for each scheduled session.

How You Can Make A Difference
