In 1995, Assistance League of Indianapolis began providing ALI Caps for children suffering from hair loss due to head injury or chemotherapy. Some of the caps are creatively decorated, and others are hand-sewn by our members. Team logo caps, which are sometimes signed by sports personalities, are also offered.
ALI Caps provide an effective aid in enhancing children's appearance and self-image after losing their hair. More importantly, it gives the children an opportunity to make a choice in their lives when they have so little control over what is happening. While the hospital staff helps the children select their caps, many of them may begin to share their feelings about their hair loss and illness. These hats are also given to children at Camp Little Red Door, a camp for children suffering from cancer. This camp is a happy, bonding time for the kids as they select and compare their caps with the others.
Each year, hundreds of ALI Caps are delivered to: Little Red Door Cancer Agency's / Summer Camp Methodist Children's Hospital Riley Hospital for Children St. Vincent Children's Hospital
The ALI Caps program has been expanded to provide decorative scarves designed especially for women who have lost hair due to radiation or chemotherapy. The scarves have been greatly appreciated and described as “very beautiful”.
In March 2008.we provided over 320 scarves at the Pink Ribbon CelebrationTM. The celebration is to honor breast cancer survivors and pays tribute to those who have lost their battle with breast cancer. At the event, Assistance League donated scarves to extremely appreciative breast cancer survivors.
